What is An Acoustic Drum Set?
An acoustic drum set is the standard collection of drums and percussion instruments, such as cymbals, that are installed on stands and played by one person using a mixture of two drumsticks in their hands and their feet, typically operating a beater for the bass drum and to control the hi-hat.
The term acoustic drum refers to the fact that they are not connected to anything to make their sound. Most standard acoustic drum kits consist of at least the following:
- Bass or kick drum, which is nowadays operated by pressing a pedal with your right foot to move a beater covered in felt against the drum
- Snare drum on a stand and typically set between a player’s knees and played with drumsticks or brushes
- Toms, at least one but very often more. Played with drumsticks
- Hit-hat, a set of two cymbals mounted onto a stand played with either or both a foot pressing the pedal that opens and closes the cymbals or with drumsticks.
- Cymbals, at least one or more that are hit with drumsticks
A Brief History of the Acoustic Drum
Acoustic drums were used in the military and orchestra originally and each individual cymbal or drum was played by individual percussionists. It was only in the 1840s that percussionists started to play around with using foot pedals to help them play more than one drum at a time. Then in the 1860s musicians playing drums started to combine different percussion instruments into a set.
Double drumming meant one person could play the snare and bass drums with sticks, while tapping cymbals via a low-boy. Although the invention of the overhand pedal made it even easier for drummers to play multiple drums in a set, most preferred to perform double drumming without the pedal. In sometime between 1904 and 1905, Companies, like Dee Chandler of New Orleans, started working on patented models for pedal systems that meant the bass drum could be played by the tapping of a foot. This eventually led to the birth of the drum kit as we know and love it today.
